The people of Nova Helix are no stranger to uncertainty, but the sudden disappearance of city technician Mark Holt has left many unsettled—and questioning whether there is more happening beneath the surface of their fractured city.

A Vanishing Act with No Leads

Holt, a mid-level infrastructure technician assigned to monitor dormant AI hubs, was last seen four nights ago near Sector 12, a largely abandoned sector that once housed one of the city’s core processing units. According to city records, Holt was performing a routine data retrieval check, a common task to archive and preserve what remains of the former AI-controlled infrastructure.

Except this time, he never returned.

Surveillance logs show no sign of his departure from the site. The last recorded activity on his holo-badge places him at the entrance of the Sector 12 Processing Vault, after which his signal abruptly cuts out. His personal comm remains inactive, and a search party sent by the Council’s security force has found no trace of him.

Council Urges Caution, Opposition Calls It a Cover-Up

In an official statement, Council Member Elias Wolfe addressed the incident with measured concern.

“This is an active investigation, and we urge the public to remain calm,” Wolfe stated. “We are working diligently to locate Mr. Holt and return him home safely.”

Shortly after the Council’s statement, Opposition representative Dara West accused the government of withholding details about the case.

“The Council’s refusal to acknowledge the irregularities in this case is telling,” West declared. “Why was a technician even assigned to a supposedly inactive AI hub? Why is there no security footage beyond his arrival? The people of Nova Helix deserve answers.”

Whispers of a Hidden Truth

As theories spread, some claim Holt’s disappearance is tied to undisclosed AI research, despite the Council’s insistence that all major AI functions remain offline. Rumors suggest that Holt may have discovered something he wasn’t meant to see—something the Restorationists are trying to bury.

Adding to the unease, encrypted messages have appeared in underground networks stating simply: "Holt found it. Now he's gone."

What exactly “it” refers to remains a mystery.

The Growing Rift in Nova Helix

With tensions already high following the hacked broadcast earlier this week, Holt’s disappearance has only added to the paranoia gripping the city.

Is this simply a case of an unfortunate accident in an abandoned zone? Or is it another sign that the struggle for control over Nova Helix’s future is only just beginning?

For now, the city waits, watches, and wonders if Mark Holt will ever be found—or if he is just the first to vanish.

Nova Helix was thrown into disarray last night when an unauthorized broadcast hijacked public terminals, holo-screens, and even some private networks across the city. The transmission, a heavily distorted video feed with an ominous voice, delivered a cryptic message that has left citizens and officials alike questioning its origin—and its implications.

A Signal from the Underground?

At precisely 23:47, all active displays within Nova Helix flickered before cutting to static. Within moments, a shadowy figure, cloaked in digital interference, appeared on screen. The voice, artificially modulated to conceal their identity, spoke just six words:

"You are being lied to. Wake up."

The feed cut abruptly, returning city displays to their normal function. But the impact of the message lingers, sparking debates across the city. Was this the work of rogue hackers? A desperate cry from the Opposition? Or something more sinister?

Council's Response: Damage Control

Council officials have moved swiftly to dismiss concerns, labeling the event as an "isolated security breach" with "no real threat to public safety."

“We are investigating the source of this unauthorized transmission and have already taken steps to reinforce the city’s network security,” stated Council Representative Dr. Ren Kessler during an emergency press briefing. “We want to assure the citizens of Nova Helix that this incident, while disruptive, poses no danger.”

Despite this reassurance, some members of the public remain skeptical. The fact that the hackers managed to infiltrate both Restorationist-controlled systems and independent private networks suggests a level of coordination beyond a mere prank.

The Opposition: A Denial, or a Warning?

Though speculation runs rampant, no faction has openly claimed responsibility. The Opposition, frequently accused of cyber disruptions, has denied involvement in an official statement.

“The Opposition has never and will never endorse reckless actions that compromise the security of Nova Helix citizens,” read the statement, signed by Dara West, a key Opposition strategist. “If this message was meant to inspire action, we urge caution. The real danger to Nova Helix is not hidden in distorted broadcasts—it’s right in front of you.”

West’s statement has only fueled further speculation, as some argue it subtly reinforces the broadcast’s claim that the Council is hiding the truth.

A Glitch, or a Call to Action?

With no clear perpetrator, theories are spreading fast. Some believe the hijacked feed was an attempt to resurrect the long-dormant AI, while others suggest it was merely an elaborate stunt designed to sow further distrust in the Council.

What remains certain is that this event marks yet another crack in the already fragile balance of Nova Helix. If this was only a warning, then the people of the city must ask themselves: what comes next?

Nova Helix, once the shining example of AI governance, now operates under the careful—some would say desperate—management of human oversight. It has been exactly one year since the artificial intelligence that once maintained order, infrastructure, and security across the city went offline, leaving the fate of its people in the hands of the Restorationist-led Council. The question remains: has humanity risen to the challenge, or is the city slowly unraveling?

The State of the City

Daily life in Nova Helix has adapted to the absence of AI governance. Though major infrastructure systems remain functional thanks to pre-existing automation, the Council has struggled to replicate the precision and efficiency that once kept the city running seamlessly. Delays in transportation, lapses in security monitoring, and inconsistencies in resource distribution have forced citizens to either adjust or take matters into their own hands.

Despite the Council’s best efforts, reports of blackouts, supply shortages, and rising crime rates suggest a growing instability. “It’s like trying to replace an irreplaceable component,” says Council Member Elias Wolfe, one of the key figures in the transition. “We are doing everything we can, but the reality is: no human system can match what we lost.”

Public Opinion: Divided and Uneasy

Surveys indicate a deep divide in public sentiment. While Restorationists insist that humanity is better off with AI rule, many citizens quietly question whether the shutdown was a blessing in disguise. The Opposition, a faction that openly challenges the Council’s leadership, has fueled this sentiment, claiming that Nova Helix is safer under human guidance.

“I don’t care what the Opposition says, things were better when the AI was running the city,” says Milo Reyes, a resident of the Industrial District. “Now, you’ve got corruption, inefficiency, and people looking out for themselves first.”

Others argue that the shift back to human leadership is worth the growing pains. “We aren’t machines, we aren’t programmed to be perfect,” says Dr. Sienna Kwan, a professor of ethics at the Nova Helix Academy. “This transition is difficult, yes, but it’s also an opportunity. We can redefine our future—without an intelligence dictating our every move.”

The Opposition: Calls for AI’s Return?

While the Council remains firm in its stance that AI will one day be reinstated, encrypted messages have surfaced in underground networks, hinting at efforts to keep it off online. Some claim these leaks are fabricated propaganda designed to incite panic, while others whisper that the Council may have found a way to reactivate what was lost.

“It’s not about whether we can bring AI back,” an anonymous message from a hacker known only as "Cipher" reads. “It’s about whether we should. The Council doesn’t want you to ask that question.”

What Comes Next?

One year later, Nova Helix stands at a crossroads. The Council pushes forward, determined to prove that humanity is better alongside AI. The Opposition stirs unrest. And the people? They watch, wait, and wonder if their city will stand—or fall.

For now, Nova Helix remains in flux. But with whispers of hidden AI research and growing discontent in the streets, the coming year may decide more than just the fate of the city. It may determine who truly holds the power: the people, the Council, or something far beyond our control.
